Over the past century, many special effects, whether in makeup, sound, or atmospheric effects, have been used in the film and motion picture industries to lure audiences with imaginative visuals. For instance, special effects make-up that is practically done behind the scenes is considered a mystical art for modifying human looks. As special effects, make-up artist Richard Smith says, “To me, there is a great sense of magic and wonder and even something godlike about changing a human face or actor or person into something entirely different, creature or another person.” Thus, This interview was conducted with Khadidja, one of Algeria’s most talented SFX make-up artists, to learn more about that profession in Algeria. She has proven that she has a talent for special effects makeup with a maximum of two years of experience.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Who are you?

My name is Khadidja independent (freelance) makeup artist in Algeria

I offer my SFX make-up services for short/feature films, advertising, events, etc.

When and how did you get started in make-up?

I have an obsession with makeup as every girl, but SFX makeup started in the year 2020. At first, I was experimenting and watching some snippets on YouTube, but when I realized I really had a talent, I was convinced and wanted to master it and develop it.

We see you are into SFX and work as a special effects make-up artist. How did you become interested in this profession of make-up?

When I discovered my talent, I decided to do activities and wanted to get a diploma, but unfortunately, there are no institutes or workshops for teaching SFX makeup in Algeria. So I decided to get online classes that require a lot of money because the site is American; I did lessons through an application, ZOOM Classes.

Changing the physical appearance with just make-up must be incredible. How do you feel about that?

I feel happy when I do my work because it is part of my life now (MY SPECIAL ART).

What do you think of the evolution of the makeup of this century?

It is very developed outside of Algeria. I mean, in the world every year, creative artists emerge in this field with really great advanced skills and ideas.

How do you go about applying for jobs? Could you tell us a little bit about the procedure?

My CV is now a page on Instagram. Now all my work is there. I do not send my work to apply for jobs. Those who are interested in my work and want to appoint me to their team, can message me on my email at khadidja.artist@outlook.com I will always be there and also it is an honor for me as I am honored to share my work.

Who is your favorite SFX makeup artist?

My favorite SFX artist is Gregory Nicotero he is also, an Effects Artist, Director, Producer, and Oscar winner. One of his most famous films is The Walking Dead.

Film production in Algeria is quite limited. So, are you satisfied with this career? Are you concerned about making SFX your long-term career?

I am not satisfied with the Algerian productions because they did not give us an opportunity to show our skills; and what we can offer for our films, and at the same time, the scenarios are almost Non-existent. I hope that the directors and producers find a solution to these problems for a better Algerian cinema.

And I am ready to make this career long-lasting, despite the difficulties mean here in Algeria I always find it difficult to buy products because they are literally non-existent here in Algeria; this is what makes working here in Algeria very difficult, but as I told you I will not give up this art because it represents me now.

Have you ever failed or made a mistake when doing make-up? If so, please tell us how you resolved or dealt with it.

Yes, who does not make mistakes at first, when I decided to try some wounds; I spoiled the look and did not know where to start again. This situation was embarrassing and funny at the same time but I learned a lot from my mistakes and the result is in front of you now.

What has been your favorite SFX make-up so far?

Honestly, all of my works are my favorite. Every shape I made is inspired by fear, accidents, and zombie movies.

Have the directors ever expressed dissatisfaction with your work? What was your reaction to that?

No, until this hour, all the directors who wrote to me liked my work, and I am much honored, and even directors from outside the country gave me their opinions about my work, I thank them all.

What skills do SFX artists require?

The skills needed for an SFX artist are the ability to make any fake things or wounds or burns or dead bodies or certain strange things look real.

What is your goal with SFX?

My goal is to develop and specialize in this Domain because when you have the necessary and basic products; it will give us more opportunities to make strange and fake wounds and scary shapes that look like real to you. I hope that we artists will have the opportunities to work and provide our requirements and everything we need to work and develop in our specialty.

What motivates you and inspires you to work as an SFX artist?

As you know here in Algeria, there is a lack of professionals in this field, and my ideas are inspired by the Horror and Zombie movies and I have great courage to advance in this work.

What is your favorite part of being a make-up artist?

The only thing I love about this field is working with people who appreciate this talent, especially the backstage.

Is there anything else you would like to share or add?

Yes, there are new projects coming soon, something new in Algeria, and theatrical artistic works.

I also provide beauty, fashion, and event services. You can find out more about my work on my website as well as on my Instagram profile.
