An in-depth conversation with Nada about mental health treatments.

Nada Mahieddine a 28 years old clinical psychologist with a license degree in clinical psychology, graduated from the university of Tipaza in 2020. She started her job as an online psychologist during COVID because of the circumstances at the time which she mentioned: “I’m glad I did because I actually got the chance to help a lot of people who felt the impact of COVID either on a collective level or a personal level , if not by the quarantine restrictions and isolation that impacted their mental well being it also had a huge impact on their physical being. A lot of people also lost many loved ones , and the ones who were affected by COVID which was known to be deadly suffered from some kind of trauma . To note that till this day patients are still coping with the aftermath of COVID whether its the long COVID side effects or them mourning the loss of someone.”

In this interview article Nada delves into her thoughts and experiences in this field.

How did you become interested in the field, who/what inspires you?

I discovered psychology and became Intrigued by human behavior from a young age , I delved into books on the subject since i was in highschool .Then i pursued it further in college even though my first three years in college were in a science and technology major . The complexities of the mind and the chance to understand people on a deeper level captivated me, solidifying my passion for psychology and the pursuit of this major. What inspired me most : personal experiences sparked my desire to become a psychologist. Witnessing the impact of mental health on individuals close to me fueled a commitment to help others navigate their struggles. The prospect of making a positive difference in people’s lives through understanding and support became a powerful motivation on my journey to becoming a psychologist.

My aspiration to become a psychologist is deeply rooted in a desire to foster positive change in the realm of mental health within my society. Recognizing the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health, I am driven by the ambition to reshape perceptions and attitudes towards these issues. I believe that by becoming a psychologist, I can contribute to breaking down barriers and misconceptions that often hinder open discussions about mental well-being.

In my envisioned role, I see myself actively engaging with the community, conducting awareness campaigns, and offering accessible resources to educate individuals about mental health. By doing so, I aim to create a more empathetic and informed society, where mental health is viewed with the same importance as physical health. Through counseling, advocacy, and educational initiatives, my goal is to make a tangible impact on the mental health landscape, ensuring that individuals feel supported and understood.

Ultimately, my journey as a psychologist is driven by a commitment to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of my community, fostering a cultural shift that embraces mental health as an integral part of overall health and wellness.

Can you go into more details about the way you do your job online?

In my role as an online psychologist, I leverage digital platforms to provide accessible and effective mental health support. Through virtual sessions, I create a safe and confidential space for clients to explore their thoughts and emotions. Utilizing secure communication tools, I conduct therapeutic sessions that bridge geographical gaps, ensuring individuals can access mental health care conveniently.

Embracing technology allows me to employ various therapeutic approaches tailored to each client’s needs. I utilize video calls, messaging, and other online tools to facilitate meaningful connections, fostering a therapeutic alliance crucial for the counseling process. The flexibility of online counseling enables me to accommodate diverse schedules and cater to a broader range of individuals seeking support.

In addition to one-on-one sessions, I may engage in virtual workshops, webinars, or digital resources to disseminate mental health knowledge and coping strategies to a wider audience. The online platform not only facilitates individual healing but also contributes to mental health awareness on a broader scale.

One on one sessions are also available because they are mandatory for some patients.

How would you define the role of a psychologist?

A psychologist plays a crucial role in understanding and addressing the complexities of the human mind and behavior. At its core, the role involves applying scientific principles and psychological theories to help individuals navigate various challenges in their lives. Psychologists employ a range of methods, including observation, assessment, and therapeutic interventions, to explore and comprehend the intricacies of mental processes and behaviors.

One primary aspect of a psychologist’s role is to provide counseling and psychotherapy to individuals experiencing emotional or psychological distress. Through empathetic listening and evidence-based interventions, psychologists help clients explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, fostering self-awareness and facilitating positive change.

Psychologists also engage in psychological assessment, using standardized tests and evaluation tools to diagnose and understand various mental health conditions. This diagnostic aspect of their role helps guide treatment plans and interventions tailored to the unique needs of each individual.

Beyond individual therapy, psychologists contribute to research and the development of psychological knowledge. They conduct studies, analyze data, and contribute to the growing understanding of human behavior, mental health disorders, and effective therapeutic approaches. In your perspectives and your experience, what is the relation between emotional, spiritual, and physical health?

In my role as a psychologist, I’ve witnessed the intricate dance between emotional, spiritual, and physical health in the lives of those I work with. Exploring emotional well-being often unveils the ripple effects on both spiritual fulfillment and physical vitality. Addressing these dimensions holistically can lead to profound transformations, where emotional resilience supports spiritual growth and positively influences physical health. It’s a delicate interplay that reinforces the importance of considering the whole person in the pursuit of lasting well-being.

In your opinion, what characteristics should psychologist have to be impactful?

In my opinion, impactful psychologists possess a blend of empathy and professionalism, creating a safe and understanding space for clients. Effective communication skills, adaptability, and cultural competence are vital, allowing them to connect with diverse individuals. A commitment to ongoing learning and staying abreast of evolving research ensures they offer the most relevant and evidence-based interventions. Above all, a genuine passion for helping others, coupled with a non-judgmental approach, forms the foundation for a psychologist to truly make a positive impact.

To what degree do you believe social media impacts people’s psychological state?

In my opinion as a psychologist, the internet profoundly influences the psychological landscape, particularly among teenagers. While it provides access to vast information and social connections, there’s a risk of excessive screen time affecting mental health.

For example platforms like TikTok can influence teenagers’ mental health, notably their attention spans. The fast-paced, short-form content may contribute to shortened attention spans and a desire for instant gratification. There’s a potential impact on concentration and sustained focus, as users become accustomed to quick, bite-sized content. It’s crucial to help teenagers develop a balance, encouraging mindful consumption of online content while promoting offline activities that foster sustained attention and overall cognitive well-being

Also Social media platforms can impact self-esteem through comparison and cyberbullying. I find that Engaging in open conversations about internet use fosters awareness and resilience, empowering teenagers to navigate the online world positively.

I would like to know your view on the common causes of psychological problems in Algeria

In my role as a psychologist, I observe that in Algeria, several factors contribute to psychological challenges. Societal pressures, economic uncertainties, and political changes can induce stress and anxiety. Additionally, cultural stigma surrounding mental health may deter individuals from seeking help. Addressing these issues involves a comprehensive approach, combining cultural sensitivity, community engagement, and accessible mental health resources to promote well-being in the Algerian context.

Nearly everywhere in the globe, mental health issues are on the rise. What would you comment on that?

As psychologist, I observe a global trend of increasing mental health issues. The rise in global mental health issues can be attributed to a complex interplay of factors. Rapid societal changes, economic uncertainties,fast-paced nature of modern life ,increased social pressures, and the pervasive influence of technology contribute to heightened stress levels. Additionally, the ongoing challenges, such as the global pandemic, have exacerbated existing mental health concerns. The stigma surrounding mental health, though gradually diminishing, still deters some from seeking help. Recognizing these multifaceted influences is crucial for implementing effective strategies to address and mitigate the rising mental health issues worldwide.

Some patients are hesitant to go to any psychological clinic out of shame over what others might think of them. What are your thoughts on it, and how would you offer those individuals advice?

As a psychologist, I understand the stigma surrounding mental health can be a significant barrier. It’s crucial to reassure individuals that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. I’d emphasize the confidential nature of therapy and highlight that many people, even those perceived as successful, seek psychological support. Encouraging open conversations within the community about mental well-being can help reduce stigma, making it easier for individuals to prioritize their mental health without fear of judgment. Ultimately, I’d stress that taking the step to seek help is a courageous and empowering decision.

Like teachers, doctors, and nurses; your work seems incredibly rewarding. What is it like to help people and make a difference in their lives?

Working as a psychologist is deeply rewarding, akin to the fulfillment experienced by teachers, doctors, and nurses. The intrinsic satisfaction arises from facilitating positive transformations in individuals’ lives. Guiding clients through emotional challenges, fostering self-discovery, and witnessing their growth instills a profound sense of purpose. The ability to contribute to mental well-being and make a lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities adds a unique dimension my professional journey. It is a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of supporting others on their path to better mental health, making the role of a psychologist both gratifying and meaningful.

As a therapist, does the job and the patients cases intervene with your psychological state? If so do you seek a therapist yourself?

Yes, the nature of the therapist’s job can impact our psychological state as therapists due to the emotional investment in clients’ cases. I find it beneficial to seek therapy myself from my fellow psychologists to manage the potential emotional toll and maintain my mental well-being. It’s a recognized practice within the field to prioritize self-care and ensure we as therapists can provide effective support for our clients.

We as psychologists employ various strategies to manage the impact of cases on our psychological well-being. These may include regular supervision or consultation with our colleagues, practicing self-reflection and setting professional boundaries. Additionally, ongoing education and training helps us psychologists develop coping mechanisms and resilience to navigate the emotional challenges inherent in tour work. Balancing a supportive professional network and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are crucial components of effective self-care for us.

What advice would you offer to students who are interested in psychology?

For students interested in psychology but unsure of their path, my advice would be to explore various branches within the field through engaging in volunteer work , actively participate in psychology-related events , Attending conferences and seminars or part-time roles in mental health settings provides valuable insights. Seeking mentorship from experienced psychologists can offer guidance and clarity. It’s essential to stay open to diverse career possibilities, as psychology spans clinical, research, and educational . Lastly, pursuing further education or certifications aligned with specific interests can enhance skills and broaden career opportunities.

In my experience as a psychologist in Algeria, I’ve encountered a prevalent tendency for individuals to project their own mental health biases onto others. There’s a pervasive societal projection that associates seeking therapy with weakness, often causing shame for those considering it. Mental health is frequently taken lightly, with individuals dismissing therapy as a sign of fragility rather than a courageous step toward well-being. Moreover, there’s a confusion between psychological needs and religious beliefs, as seeking therapy is sometimes misconstrued as a reflection of weak faith. Addressing these misconceptions requires nuanced conversations to promote a more empathetic and informed understanding of mental health in Algerian society.

Ensuring accessible therapy in Algeria is crucial to address the pressing mental health challenges. Confidentiality measures can be implemented to safeguard privacy, encouraging individuals to seek help without fear of judgment. Promoting the idea that therapy is a strength, not a weakness, is vital in reshaping societal attitudes. Confronting emotional needs and mental health issues can pave the way for a more resilient and empathetic society, fostering personal growth and contributing to positive societal change in Algeria.
