A Combination of an Artistic Mind with Software: with the Algerian Digital Artist, Hmimed

Ahmed, also known as Le Hmimed, is a talented digital artist who makes intriguing works of art that illustrate social community life and the surrounding environment. By integrating his artistic mindset with software programs, Hmimed makes images, characters, and facial expressions that take us on a sort of cultural trip. His remarkable digital art truly speaks for itself. However, in this interview, further about his artistic mindset and how his career began, is revealed.
Let’s get to know you first. Would you introduce yourself?
I am Ahmed, born in 1993, a graduate of the Higher School of Arts in Algiers, majoring in painting.
Was there a specific moment when you said you wanted to be an artist? How was your beginning?
The beginning was from childhood as a hobby, and after earning my baccalaureate, I ultimately made the decision to enroll in the Higher School of Fine Arts because I did not feel my soul was in any other field of art.
For me, art is a way of life, a hobby, a means of expressing oneself, and something that gives its creator moral value.
What can you tell us about your art and what tool or software do you use to create your works?
I work with Photoshop and procreate to create the art that I am currently publishing on the digital platform Instagram, which is digital art. I also draw paintings with oil colors and watercolors, as well as ink on paper and murals.

In my opinion, software and tools serve as a medium between the artist and the work, with each tool’s role varying depending on the nature of the task at hand.
What motivates you and what inspires you the most?
There is nothing specific about what the inspiration is or how it comes about; as for the inspiration, in most cases, it’s enough to simply accept the drawing without being limited by a particular theme.
Could you tell us how to choose your characters for drawing? Are these characters related to you in some way?
In many cases, they are fictional characters without using a reference or model, and they are relatively similar to me in terms of appearance, with some intentional exaggeration in features and some details.
Did you get any chance to expose your art anywhere and do you intend to?
I had some opportunities, but for the present time, it is not in my plans. Maybe I will devote myself to it at a later time.
What does the street mean to you? How would you describe Algerian street?

For me, it is a source of inspiration at times…
The Algerian street is the inevitable refuge for everyone whose circumstances prevented them from being in a better place.
Usually, the meaning of an artwork is left up to the audience to determine the message behind it, but in some of your artworks, the meaning is deeper than it seems. What are your thoughts on that?
Personally, I see that when art carries a direct message, it will be a product that will be consumed as soon as it is understood.
As for the ambiguity, I feel that it gives the painting a kind of magic, making it a lasting value.
In your opinion, how can exposing your artwork to the community be beneficial?
Although Algerian society does not need my creations in order to benefit from it, I do believe that promoting art among the people is preferable to promoting foolishness.

Do you have any advice for beginners who want to get into any kind of art?
As long as you are enjoying the performance, don’t worry about the outcome.
How do you see the future of art in Algeria?
In my perspective, the practice of art is increasing. As for the artistic culture of the general Algerian public, it tends more towards some musical arts, unlike cinema, theater, and fine arts.

And is there anything you want to achieve through the Instagram page in the coming years?
It is for me as my artistic portfolio, and I think I have reached what I want through it.
